Pros

  • Compartés’ top-notch customer service allows you to alter your subscription (for preferences, allergies, and restrictions) with a simple phone call, so you can enjoy its innovative takes on chocolatey classics without worry.

Operating since 1950, Compartés still crafts small batches of confections by hand, without the use of machinery or large-scale production tools. Its à la carte selection is vast, and while you may have even seen some of its bars in specialty stores, its subscription service provides a truly special opportunity to indulge in what the brand does best. With an option for monthly or quarterly delivery, Compartés subscription boxes are seasonal, not only ingredients-wise but also in terms of theme; in other words, December might see holiday-inspired picks, whereas July might tend toward fruity flavors.

Each box contains between $60 to $70 worth (averaging about 18 ounces) of top-tier chocolate and confections, such as floral truffle boxes, mini fruit assortments, and chocolate bars. The service also gives subscribers the ability to test out some of the chocolatiers’ new and exciting releases before they hit the market; for example, summer boxes will often include not-yet-available bars of chocolate. If you happen to have a preference for milk or dark chocolate, or find yourself worried about an allergy, just contact customer service to let them know of your restrictions and they’ll happily accommodate. Another aspect we really appreciate about the Compartés three-, six-, and 12- month subscriptions is its ease of giftability, as the site offers the option to include gift wrap and ribbon at checkout.

Murray’s

Credit: Murray’s

Four different subscription options give subscribers the power to indulge in whatever sort of cheesy delights speak to them. Included in the options are: a selection complete with a beverage pairing guide, an exploratory box for more adventurous eaters, a cheese board-specific box, and a sampling of global offerings. Murray’s also offers a mac and cheese club. While the different subscription selections may cater particularly well to specific cheese-lovers, each includes some of the world’s best bries, cheddars, goudas, and more, as well as exhaustive information packets, so you can learn all about what you’re tasting in real time. In fact, we were so impressed with the quality of these comprehensive boxes, the subscription service also made our list of cheese-specific subscriptions.

You can sign up for three-, six-, and 12-month cycles, saving more money the longer you subscribe. The amount of cheese in each box varies from one to 1.5 pounds and some boxes, like the Cheese Board Club, come along with accoutrements like cured meats, crackers, and pickles. These boxes may not offer a gift wrapping option but you’d be hard pressed to find a more apt gift for frequent hosts, cheese enthusiasts, or anyone culinarily curious. You can include a gift message along with your gifted subscription, though.

Blue Apron Meal Subscription

Credit: Blue Apron

Pros

  • Blue Apron provides user-friendly instructions, requires minimal prep and cookware, and clearly labels its ingredients.

Blue Apron may just be the most well-known meal delivery service out there, and after testing it ourselves, we also consider ourselves big fans. If you’re looking to take a little pressure off of the planning, shopping, and prepping your home-cooked meals, Blue Apron is an excellent solution. In our testing, we experienced a little bit of repetition in the meals, mostly in the reuse of sauces and cooking methods, but the portion sizes are generous, the produce is noticeably fresh, and we found that our cooked meals accurately reflected the meal description and accompanying photo. We also appreciated that the vegetarian meals were balanced and filling.

You can choose your preferred delivery day of the week and pause or skip as needed. And if you do find yourself with a lingering question or issue, Blue Apron’s customer service is top-notch. Otherwise, setting up your subscription is straightforward. Simply indicate the number of meals you desire, along with any dietary preferences you may have (veggie-forward, fast and easy, etc.), and then fill up your cart with whichever meals speak to you. We were also fans of the add-ons available with each order, like one-off prepared meals and desserts, which allowed us to fill in the gaps during busier weeks.

CookUnity1

Credit: CookUnity

Pros

  • CookUnity offers meals tailored to a number of different dietary preferences, such as gluten-free or paleo, none of which compromise on taste.

CookUnity is a unique subscription service in that it provides ready-to-reheat meals of restaurant quality. The service achieves this feat by partnering with acclaimed chefs from all around the globe. These chef-forward offerings are plentiful and diverse, filling the site with meal choices that are never repetitive. With four hubs spread across the country, CookUnity is able to prioritize regional, in-season produce.

If you are someone looking for access to restaurant-style meals without the price tag of eating out, or the hassle of preparing the meal yourself, CookUnity provides an option that simply requires a pop in the microwave or oven. The ease of use also makes the service a great gift for that person in your life who doesn’t have much free time or the loved one that isn’t much of a home cook. You can easily purchase a gift card through the site, too. Speaking of which, the ordering process is nearly as seamless as reheating the meals themselves: Simply input your preferences, take your pick from the hundreds of options, and load your box with anywhere from four to 16 meals per week.

Nurture Life

Credit: Nurture Life

Cons

  • A maximum order of 16 meals per week doesn’t quite cover every meal, especially if you are feeding more than one kiddo, making the service a supplement to home cooking.

With menu offerings that include both prepared solid foods and soft, baby-friendly options, Nurture Life covers breakfast to dinner and all the snacks in between for babies, toddlers, and younger kids. Offering nine allergen-free categories, such as sesame-free, gluten-free, and soy-free, the subscription is also a fantastic option for safely feeding little ones with dietary restrictions. Not only that, but the company also works hard to guarantee the safety of its largely organic offerings by conducting heavy metal testing on its meals and snacks.

Nurture Life works much like other meal delivery services: You choose a plan for how many meals a week you’d like delivered (you save more per meal the more you order), load up your cart with preferred meal and snack options, wait about a week, and your box will be delivered. With dozens of items in each category — Kids’ Meals, Finger Foods, Super Sammies, Oaties, Smoothies, Mighty Bites, and Purely Puddin’ — and rotating new options, it’s unlikely your kiddos will get bored. That said, the service’s core menu is handy for both picky eaters and youngsters who like to repeat their favorite meals. We were also pleased to find that skipping, pausing, and canceling the service was straightforward and seamless.

Daily Harvest Food Assortment

Credit: Daily Harvest

With incredibly easy-to-prepare meals, Daily Harvest achieves its goal of making nutritious food accessible and effortless. While the site boasts five categories of meals with high nutritional value — including grains, harvest bowls, pastas, and breakfast bowls — it really shines when it comes to Daily Harvest’s smoothie offerings. You can choose to stock your box with nine, 14, or 24 ready-to-blend smoothies, each of which has a significant freezer shelf-life. The dozens of flavor options are not only extensive, but also inventive and delicious. Some of our favorite options when we tested the service include black sesame and banana and blueberry and cacao. For each smoothie, and other Daily Harvest meals, a sourcing team ensures the ingredients meet freshness and quality standards.

If you know a fan smoothie, Daily Harvest makes for a splendid gift. Along with gift card options, the site also has a gift set section with eight box offerings — ranging from protein boost smoothies to new parent support —  each of which allows the gift recipient to pick their delivery date.

Melissa’s

Credit: Melissa’s

You may have seen Melissa’s produce stocked in your local grocery store. The company is well known for its network of both conventional and organic produce, which it distributes directly and through third parties. And while you may be able to pick up a Melissa’s bag of blood oranges or sack of gold potatoes at the market, what is less ubiquitous, and perhaps more exciting, is the brand’s subscription fruit boxes.

On its site, Melissa’s offers two types of fruit subscriptions: an organic mixed fruit box and an exotic fruit box. Along with being available as a one-off order, the mixed fruit option can also be set for a biweekly or monthly delivery. The box’s eight to 10 pounds of produce vary according to seasonality and availability, but are always organic and grown as sustainably as possible. The content of this box may include California classics like avocados and grapefruits, or in-season pome fruits like pears and apples. If you’re more of a tropical fruit lover, the brand offers an exotic option as well, which boasts a plethora of harder-to-find fruits like baby pineapples and strawberry papaya. You can sign up for a three-, six-, or 12-month subscription and receive varying weights of exotic fruit of each particular month (the schedule is preset, allowing you to jump in or out of the subscription contingent on your preferences). For both options, fruits are shipped while still firm to protect them against bruising and spoiling, a common issue with shipped fruits, so give them some time to come to their ideal ripeness.

eCreamery

Credit: eCreamery

If a monthly delivery of ice cream pints sounds like your dream, you’ve come to the right place. No matter if you opt for the company’s three-, six-, or 12-month subscription, the monthly four flavors — which this month included vanilla fudge crunch, salted caramel peanut butter, cappuccino crunch, and brownie batter — are dreamt up and custom-churned with locally sourced ingredients by a small team in Omaha, Nebraska.

The monthly delivery never repeats flavors, so you get the full spectrum of what these ice cream experts have to offer. You can also order from eCreamery’s core collection in bundles of four, eight, or 12 pints. Aside from the fact that we think the subscription makes for a primo gift for the ice cream lover in your life, we also love that the company offers occasion-specific pints with categories like “I’m Sorry” and “Just Because” if you’re looking for a one-off delivery.

Butcher Box Subscription

Credit: Butcher Box

Butcher Box prides itself on its dedication to regenerative farming practices, living wages for the farmers, and humane treatment for all of the animals, sourcing its protein options from the U.S., Norway, Australia, and Canada alone. As a certified B Corp , its commitment is evident in the quality of its beef, pork, poultry, lamb, bison, and seafood. While you can order a one-time box from the brand’s high-caliber catalog, its subscription options are a great no-brainer way to ensure you’ve always got your favorite protein on hand.

Butcher Box offers two types of subscriptions, curated and custom, which in the “classic” size, range from 8.5 to 11 pounds and 9 to 14 pounds, respectively. Both are also available in a “big” size, which is double the weight of the “classic.” Once you select which subscription you’d like — the curated box contains a dealer’s choice of pork, beef, and/or chicken options, and the custom box allows you to load your order with a protein medley of your own choosing — you’ll receive a delivery of well-packed protein (with enough dry ice to provide a six-hour buffer, just in case you’re not home when it arrives). The delivery frequency is easy to alter — ranging from as little as every two weeks to every other month. We think that customization is a great perk.

Bags of coffee from Trade Coffee

Credit: Trade Coffee

Pros

  • It’s extremely customizable when it comes to initially finding the perfect bean for your brew. Switching up your preferences or delivery frequency is easy, making it an ideal choice for both those dedicated to one brewing method and also those looking for an exploratory coffee experience.

This expansive coffee subscription service boasts an impressive selection of over 450 coffee options sourced from roasters all across the country whose beans are roasted just 48 hours before your order ships out. These partnering roasters, Trade Coffee ensures, only source beans from growers dedicated to proper stewardship of their land. The two options, a personalized subscription or a curated subscription, both contain a single 10.93 oz. per delivery. The site’s two subscription offerings prove inclusive: You can pick out your beans or opt for a hands-off approach.

The curated subscription selection, which offers either bi-weekly or monthly delivery, includes five different options, from “Best Sellers” to “Dark Roast.” The personalized option, on the other hand, first gathers information about preferred brewing method, desired flavor profile, delivery frequency, and more, then presents you with your first bag of coffee complete with a description of the beans and the roasters. After the first delivery, you can allow the algorithm to continue to populate subsequent deliveries or fill the queue yourself with beans you’d like to try (or refill your queue with your best-loved bean for deliveries to come). Gift subscriptions are also available, and operate as personalized subscriptions, allowing your gift recipient the option to curate their own queue after the first delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a food subscription box?

A food subscription box is a recurring shipment of food items — including specialty foods, gourmet melanges, confections, and meals — which are delivered to your doorstep on a scheduled basis. These subscriptions can vary in terms of intended use, price, and, of course, contents; but generally they provide a deserved treat for oneself, an awesome gift for a loved one, or a weekly helping hand that takes the pressure off tasks like nightly meal-prep. Some subscription services give you free rein to curate your own box, like our pick for best smoothie subscription, Daily Harvest; and others let you sit back and leave it up to the experts to fill your delivery with their top picks, like our choice for best ice cream subscription, eCreamery.

  • Can a food subscription box be sent as a gift?

Many food subscription boxes make fantastic gifts and, in fact, all of those we’ve included above can be gifted, if not directly then in the form of a gift card. Just how gift-y the deliveries are varies per service, with some including gift wrapping (like Compartés) and others simply allowing you to transfer over the tracking information to the gift recipient (such as Melissa’s). All in all, if you have someone in your life who has a specific food favorite, or just needs a little break from feeding themselves or their family, considering a subscription service is a superb way to celebrate them, no matter if there’s a specific occasion to do so or not.

  • How much does a food subscription box cost?

Again, the cost for these subscriptions vary. Cost can reflect not only the value of the box’s contents but also offset the price of delivery; for example, transporting pints of ice cream requires a lot more dry ice than coffee, which requires none. Subscription services can often cost quite a bit, and that’s generally attributable to the quality of the food items included as well as the craftsmanship that goes into growing, crafting, or cooking them. Costs can sometimes be offset by seasonal sales, sign-up promotions, and by ordering in bulk which, for some services, decreases the overall price.

  • Do food subscription boxes offer alternatives for allergies?

Put simply, some do and some don’t. Some options make it abundantly clear that they cater to those with allergies or restrictions on their websites, for others it may take a bit more digging. In contacting all of the above subscriptions’ customer services, we consistently had pleasant experiences when asking questions of all sorts — so, if ever in doubt, reach out.
